Ice Advisory

Practical expertise for navigation in ice

Experienced Ice Advisors supporting Masters and bridge teams in polar waters and the Baltic Sea. We provide onboard advice and remote support tailored to the vessel, operating area and voyage.

Onboard Ice Advisory

Operating in ice requires careful preparation, sound judgement and an understanding of changing conditions. Nordcrewing connects shipowners and operators with experienced Ice Advisors who bring practical knowledge from icebreakers, expedition vessels, merchant ships and offshore operations.

Our advisors support the Master and bridge team with passage preparation, interpretation of ice information and practical advice throughout the assignment. Each advisor is selected according to the vessel, operating area, voyage requirements and relevant experience.

Polar Waters

We provide Ice Advisory support for voyages in the Arctic and Antarctic, including the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, Svalbard and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Depending on the assignment, our advisors can assist with:

  • Reviewing intended routes and available ice information.
  • Interpreting ice charts, satellite imagery and forecasts.
  • Assessing developing ice conditions and discussing passage options.
  • Advising on vessel handling and operational precautions in ice.
  • Supporting the bridge team with practical ice navigation knowledge.

Qualifications, certification and regional experience are checked against the requirements of each assignment.

Baltic Sea and Winter Navigation

We also support vessels operating in the Baltic Sea, including the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Bay of Bothnia.

Our advisors bring experience of seasonal ice, changing weather and the practical demands of winter shipping. Support can include reviewing ice conditions, discussing route options and advising the bridge team during independent navigation or icebreaker-assisted passages.

Embarkation and disembarkation are arranged according to the vessel’s schedule and suitable transfer locations. Common joining points include the Skaw area, the Kiel Canal approaches and Tallinn roads, subject to local arrangements, weather and safe transfer conditions.

Remote Ice Advisory

For vessels requiring additional shore-based expertise, we offer remote support before and during the voyage.

This can include reviewing ice charts and available satellite imagery, discussing route options and providing updates as conditions develop. The frequency of communication and scope of support are agreed before the assignment.

Remote advice depends on the information available and communications with the vessel. It complements the bridge team’s observations and judgement and does not replace onboard expertise where required.

Working with Your Bridge Team

Our Ice Advisors work alongside the Master and crew in an advisory capacity. The Master retains command and responsibility for the vessel, navigation and operational decisions.

Before mobilisation, we agree the scope of service, required experience, reporting arrangements and expected duration. Any applicable certification or regulatory requirements are considered for the particular voyage.
